Sanford is a city in Lee County, North Carolina, U.s.. The population was 30,261 at the 2020 census.[five] It is the county seat of Lee County.[half-dozen]

Sanford was named for C.O. Sanford, a railroad civil engineer instrumental in the building of the rail lines through the expanse that formed the foundation of what became the city of Sanford.
Sanford is located in Lee County, Due north Carolina, which was formed from parts of the surrounding three counties in 1907. On cosmos of the new county, Sanford and Jonesboro were the major towns in the surface area. Rather than decide which would be the county seat, the conclusion was to place the county's new courthouse directly between the two towns. For decades, Lee County was the only county in the United States to have a courthouse with an RFD address. The boondocks of Jonesboro became Jonesboro Heights, and the name of Sanford was kept for the town.
The general Sanford area played primal roles in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, specifically regarding sites like the House in the Horseshoe and Endor Iron Furnace. Over the following decades, the Sanford area became an important source of coal, brownstone, and brick. Sanford is 42 miles (68 km) southwest of Raleigh, the state capital, 57 miles (92 km) southeast of Greensboro, and 36 miles (58 km) northwest of Fayetteville.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total expanse of 29.3 square miles (75.nine km2), of which 29.1 foursquare miles (75.3 km2) are country and 0.three foursquare miles (0.7 kmtwo), or 0.88%, are water.[12] Fiddling Buffalo Creek, a tributary of the Deep River, flows due north through the centre of the city. Large Buffalo Creek flows through the west side of the city, and the entire metropolis is function of the Greatcoat Fearfulness River watershed. Lick Creek and its tributaries drain the east side of the city.

As of the 2020 United States census, in that location were thirty,261 people, 10,418 households, and vi,723 families residing in the city.
2009 [edit]
As of the census[3] of 2009, there were 29,922 people, which was a 28.9% increase from 2000. The population density was 1243 people per square mile (372.5/km2). There were 9,223 housing units at an average density of 383.2 per foursquare mile (147.9/km2). The racial makeup of the urban center was 55.87% White, 29.xix% African American, 0.50% Native American, 1.06% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, xi.93% from other races, and one.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 19.03% of the population.
There were 8,550 households, out of which 34.5% had children under the age of eighteen living with them, 46.0% were married couples living together, 17.ix% had a female householder with no hubby present, and 31.0% were not-families. 26.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and nine.iv% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 people and the average family unit size was 3.15 people.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.ane% under the historic period of 18, 10.v% from xviii to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.two% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.v males. For every 100 females age xviii and over, there were 94.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $34,804, and the median income for a family was $39,447. Males had a median income of $30,527 versus $23,393 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,038. Three high schools are located in Sanford: Lee County High Schoolhouse, Lee Early College on CCCC's campus, and Southern Lee High School. Southern Lee High School and Lee Early College both opened during the 2005–2006 school twelvemonth.
There are 3 middle schools: West Lee Centre Schoolhouse, E Lee Heart School and SanLee Eye School. SanLee Middle School opened in the 2008–2009 school twelvemonth. An alternative school, Bragg Street Academy, serves students in grades 6 through 12.
